Firing on Fort Sumter

Firing on Fort Sumter

My sisters and I came down to Rainbow Row to watch.  We so hope the southern troops are going to capture Fort Sumter. We didn't know what to expect.  Lots of friends were there. Everyone was dressed like they were going to a garden party. We cheered every time the cannons blasted!  It was very exciting.  I don't think the ladies realized this was the beginning of a war and not a show put on for their benefit. After all, some of our boys might be killed!

Cordially,
Miss Amanda Honeydew

    1. We had a war going on here and you are sitting there watching us fight. Instead, of helping us fight.

  3. It Was a terrible! Everyone was so scared and we didn't have enough gunpowder to fight. There is booms going off and I am trying to not get hit by the booms. Everything was destroyed. It was going to be the start of a War.

  6. Me and my fellow soldiers were resting one night . When I heard the loud sound of cannon balls shooting out cannons . It made me jump , I woke up , and looked for food or supplies . We barely had any gun powder . The only food we have is pork . 34 hours , 34 hours of cannon balls blasting us no food . Finally we surrendered but most of us were dead or bombed . This doesn't look good for the Union .

  11. I feel sad if this is a war but it feels like a party to. I hope the Southerns win. Our friends or siblings are out and maybe fighting or maybe dead.

  12. It made me sad because of the south and north are in battle. They should not be in battle. The war started for no reason.

  14. I am sitting on my front porch watching the terrifying war. I am trying to forget how sad the looks on the girls' faces when the cannons blasted. 30 hours later the U.S. soldiers finally surrendered. I saw the U.S. flag come down.
